This study examines the environmental impact of the construction industry, with a focus on emerging economies such as Nigeria. It aims at assessing the carbon footprint of construction projects and explores sustainable design and construction practices that can mitigate environmental challenges. The research adopts a review and survey approach, analyzing a variety of studies and data sources to examine factors contributing to carbon emissions from the construction industry and to identify effective methods for carbon emission reduction. Some of the key findings reveal the major drivers and barriers to sustainable construction, emphasizing the pivotal role of green building standards and practices in reducing carbon emissions. Furthermore, the study explores the potential of innovative strategies such as green bonds and community-based adaptation in fostering sustainable development and achieving global sustainability goals. In addition, the research significantly contributes to the fields of sustainable construction and urban planning by advocating a shift towards low-carbon construction practices and emphasizing the importance of life cycle assessments and sustainable design principles. It offers valuable insights for policymakers, industry professionals, and researchers seeking to address the environmental impact of construction and support sustainable development in emerging economies.
