摘要

The concentrations of heavy metals in wastewater effluents from four food processing facilities in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State Nigeria, were evaluated in this study. To represent the dry and wet seasons for the 2023 and 2024 study years, a total of 128 wastewater samples were taken from each site in February and July using standard procedure. The results showed that the average concentrations of every heavy metal were higher than the recommended standards. Significant variations between the locations, times of year, and seasons were revealed by the statistical analysis. With the exception of lead in Kilimanjaro and Chicken Republic, heavy metal concentrations were found to be higher during the dry season than during the wet season. High levels of pollution were shown by the heavy metal pollution index profile, especially in Kilimanjaro wastewater effluent, which had an index of 467.10. These food industries’ pollution levels were ranked as follows: Kilimanjaro > Chicken Republic > Native Chicken Delicacy > Crunchies. As a result, it is recommended that these food processing facilities be obliged to set up treatment facilities where they are located.
