Fungal diseases in Platanus trees in Istanbul

Platanus trees, which are found frequently throughout Istanbul’s historical and central regions, have a significant cultural and historical impact on this ancient city. This study concerns the fungal diseases of plane trees, which have emerged due to climate change, rapid population growth, the deleterious effects of industrial pollution, and other factors. The investigation reveals the presence of fungal pathogens and delineates established control strategies. Twenty-seven species of disease-causing fungus were identified, comprising 15 Basidiomycota and 12 Ascomycota. The illnesses caused by these discovered fungi and the techniques for controlling them have been described in detail. Among the fungal pathogens identified, the most significant is Ceratocystis platani, the causal agent of canker stain disease in plane trees. Initially discovered in Istanbul in 2011, it has since proliferated rapidly, destroying numerous antique plane trees. This disease is regarded as a significant threat on a global scale, causing stem and branch canker disease in plane trees. It became evident that the activities of fungi such as Ganoderma applanatum and Fomes fomentarius weaken plane trees, making them susceptible to natural forces like strong winds, heavy hail, and heavy snow loads, which ultimately led to the demise of numerous centuries-old plane trees. Without adequate precautions against Ceratocystis platani and wood-decaying fungi, many historic Platanus trees are at risk.
