Advances in research on the impact of urban blue-green landscape patterns on heat island effects: a systematic literature review

With rapid global urbanization and the increasing frequency of extreme heat events, the urban heat island (UHI) effect poses a growing threat to sustainable urban development. Understanding the ecological functions and cooling potential of urban blue-green space (UBGS) landscape patterns has become an urgent research priority. However, existing reviews often focus on specific aspects and lack systematic integration, particularly in landscape metric development, modeling approaches, and scale adaptability. This study applies the PRISMA protocol and CiteSpace bibliometric analysis to systematically review UBGS–UHI studies published between 2013 and 2024 in the Web of Science Core Collection. First, ten high-frequency keyword clusters were identified, summarizing major themes such as cooling mechanisms, landscape pattern construction, and influencing factors—including patch morphology, configuration, seasonality, and climate zones. Second, the study highlights emerging modeling approaches, including Bayesian networks, circuit theory, generalized additive models (GAM), and multiscale geographically weighted regression (MGWR), revealing a shift toward multi-scale modeling, causal inference, process simulation, and data-driven integration. Finally, the paper proposes planning recommendations such as context-specific UBGS allocation, incorporation of 3D structural indicators, and a unified “prediction–optimization–intervention” framework. This study deepens the understanding of the UBGS–UHI relationship, maps the knowledge evolution of the field, and provides methodological and theoretical support for climate-resilient urban planning and thermal environment governance.
