<p>Stem charcoal rot is one of the most recurrent diseases in semi-arid regions of Brazil. Genetic resistance through selection of resistant genotypes is an effective alternative to control the disease. The aims of this study were to determine the best phenological stage of common bean for carrying out inoculation, and to evaluate the effectiveness of the inoculation method that uses rice infested with <i>Macrophomina phaseolina</i> (Tassi.) Goid in the common bean crop. In the first experiment, the aim was to determine the ideal phenological stage. In the second experiment, 40 common bean lines at the phenological stage chosen in the first experiment were assessed in various months. Plant height, lesion size, disease severity, and root collar diameter were measured, this last one was only measured in the second experiment in May, and disease severity was only assessed in November. The method of inoculation in the V0 stage using rice inoculated with <i>M. phaseolina</i> proved to be the most effective method to evaluate disease susceptibility, allowing different variables to be used to distinguish the lines as resistant and susceptible. The genotypes considered promising in both evaluations were BGF16, BRSMG Supremo, BRS Timbó, BRS Valente, Pérola, BRS Vereda, BGF12, BGF4, BRSMG Majestoso, BGF31, BRS Notável, BRS Pitanga, BGF2, BGF34, BRS Esteio, BRS Pontal, BGF37, BGF43, BRSMG Madrepérola, BGF27, BRS Cometa, BRSMG União, and BGF20, as they exhibited higher levels of resistance.</p>
