Documenting the first neonate and juvenile rare deep-sea kitefin shark (Dalatias licha) in the Adriatic Sea, with insight into fishery-induced trauma

The kitefin shark (Dalatias licha) is one of the least studied shark species in the Adriatic Sea, where only a few documented records exist. This study presents the first documented neonate (33.2 cm TL, 128 g TW) in the Adriatic, which also represents the smallest actively feeding individual ever recorded, alongside a juvenile female (49.1 cm TL, 458 g TW) captured at depths of 500 and 670 m. Field observations were supplemented with local ecological knowledge from fishermen from the southern Adriatic Sea off Albania. For the first time, biometric measurements and condition indices of the individuals from the Adriatic are reported. Clinical assessments conducted upon retrieval from a commercial trawler are presented, alongside macroscopic pathomorphological examinations and radiographic imaging. Vertebral analysis revealed variations in radiopacity within precaudal vertebrae, indicating ongoing calcification and ontogenetic differences. These findings provide the first biological data on the kitefin shark in the Adriatic Sea, offering new insights into its presence and emphasizing key considerations for conservation and fisheries management.
