<p>This study provides information on the reproductive traits and population parameters of <i>Pyrrhulina australis</i> (Lebiasinidae). Field work was conducted monthly between February 2009 and January 2011, along littoral zones and marginal lakes of the Paraguay River, Porto Murtinho subregion, in the southern Pantanal, Brazil. Fish were sampled using a nonstandardized seine net and sieves. The female–male sex ratio was 1.06: 1 and differed significantly among size classes. No significant variation was observed in the length–weight relationship between the sexes, and negative allometric growth was observed for both females and males. A nonseasonal pattern of reproduction was found with both mature and maturing females and males with high values of the gonadosomatic index throughout the year. Females and males differed significantly for <i>L</i><sub>50</sub>, with values of 23.4&#xa0;mm and 25.2&#xa0;mm, respectively. Mean absolute fecundity was 144.1 oocyte and was not related to female size, total weight, nor gonad weight. Mean relative fecundity was 0.28 oocytes per milligram of female total weight. Three to four peaks in the oocyte size class frequency distribution evidenced multiple spawning. Our results point to an opportunistic reproductive strategy featuring high fecundity, small <i>L</i><sub>50</sub>, multiple spawning, and continuous reproductive activity. Ornamental use of the species is briefly discussed.</p>
