Relationality, corporality, and care: towards a meaningful teaching and learning of public speaking with an AI-coaching platform
摘要
This paper is the result of a research project undertaken at a public university in Singapore. It investigates prevailing student sentiment – their pre-conceptions, expectations, apprehensions, sentiments; how they think and feel – towards using, an Artificial Intelligence (AI) powered coach by the name of Moodie.ai for public speaking, and if meaningful Teaching and Learning (T&L) is at all possible with the use of such a platform. Ten undergraduate participants were recruited to participate in a six-week speaking trial using Moodie.ai. Two Focus Group Discussions were conducted pre- and post-trial. Participants had also to submit three Guided Reflections after the trial along with a minimum of six videos of themselves speaking using the platform along with the corresponding autogenerated feedback. Results show that majority of participants would much rather have a human being as their public speaking instructor. Thematic Analysis of the data found that (1) relationality and corporality of the (human) instructor, particularly his/her face as well as (2) understanding and applying feedback as a form of care are necessary in ensuring that meaningful T&L of the said skill take place in a techno-digitized context.
