Agent-Based Models for Simulating Consumer-led Innovation: Pathways to Dual Upgrading in China's Economic Development Strategy

As China has adopted a new development pattern that promotes the dual upgrading of consumption and industry, in the current study, we use an agent-based model to simulate how consumer preferences impact firm innovation and supply quality. After conducting policy experiments with this model, the findings highlight the microlevel mechanism for dual upgrading, offering both theoretical insights and policy guidance for overcoming economic challenges. The findings also reveal that niche market development is essential, providing new profit opportunities and guiding innovative practices among supply-side firms. Additionally, promoting consumption upgrades drives technological innovation, thereby boosting sales, profits, market competition, and overall market vitality. Furthermore, strategically deploying policy incentives emerges as a crucial mechanism by which to achieve dual upgrading. Policy incentives not only attract firms to participate but also incentivize increased investment in innovation. This, in turn, improves operating conditions, elevates consumer utility levels, and enhances overall consumer welfare. While rooted in China’s development context, the analytical framework and insights contribute to a broader understanding of demand-driven upgrading processes, offering valuable implications for other economies undergoing structural transformation.
