Spillover Effect and Systemic Risk Analysis of the Top Automotive Chip Companies

The stability of the global automotive industry increasingly depends on semiconductor chips, making the risk interconnections among automotive chip manufacturers a critical concern. This paper examines systemic risk in the automotive chip sector by analyzing risk spillover patterns among 42 leading companies from 2017 to 2022. Through integrated analytical framework combining Diebold-Yilmaz spillover index, network analysis and a risk contagion model, the research reveals several significant findings about risk transmission within the industry. The results show strengthening risk spillover effects over the study period, though the primary risk contributors have varied across years. The risk interconnectedness exhibits heterogeneous connectivity, with feed-forward-loop motifs emerging as dominant transmission channel. Additionally, the risk propagation in the industry was shifted from intermediary brokerage companies to hub companies with extensive spillover from 2017 to 2022. These findings will provide valuable guidance for industry stakeholders on developing target mitigation strategies and for investors on optimizing their portfolio within this sector.
