<p>Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) people are disproportionately incarcerated. Nascent scholarship has begun to explore this phenomenon, but we lack a comprehensive theoretical account to make sense of this disparate empirical work and to guide future research. This paper proposes such an account by bringing together insights from general strain theory and feminist pathways theory to create a queer pathways framework that more thoroughly accounts for LGBTQ-specific strains and experiences that range from the macro-structural to the interactional and intrapersonal. Using this framework, I generate a series of propositions to help guide future empirical work on LGBTQ incarceration.</p>
