<p>Using a capabilities approach to examine access to protection and wage recovery avenues for (potential) victims of human trafficking for labour exploitation in Belgium and the Netherlands, this article assesses whether they constitute ‘genuine’ opportunities (Wolff and de-Shalit 2007) for exploited workers. Drawing on fieldwork, research reports, and scholarship, it finds that victims of exploitation—primarily migrant workers—face significant risks when seeking protection and wage recovery. The article highlights good practices and proposes measures to enhance effective access while mitigating risks. Given the global relevance of these challenges, the findings offer insights applicable beyond the two case studies.</p>
