Background <p>Experience Sampling Methods (ESM) are increasingly used to derive idiographic networks, which promise more personalized interventions. Using the most frequently used network approach (VAR-model), we demonstrate the value of qualitative methods to enhance their validity.</p> Methods <p>A multiple case study with four adolescents examined the relationship between identity/self-esteem and depressive complaints. Quantitative ESM data was enriched with open-ended ESM data and semi-structured interviews. In a mixed methods parallel design, VAR-based networks and reflexive thematic analyses were combined.</p> Results <p>The qualitative data gave meaning and context to adolescents’ ESM data and networks, revealed uncaptured experiences and challenged associations in the network.</p> Conclusion <p>Mixed methods approaches can enhance the validity of idiographic networks by personalizing ESM designs prior to assessment, adding meaning and context to nodes and edges, and providing alternative explanations for observed dynamics. We discuss several reasons, strategies and ways forward for mixed methods idiographic networks.</p>

Background

Methods
