Objective <p>While previous research has highlighted the habitual use of negative coping strategies among adolescents, the mechanisms underlying this potential reinforcement pattern remain underexplored. Grounded in a time-cognitive framework, this study examines how attention to negative information (ANI) and future negative insights (FN) reinforce and contribute to the development of negative coping styles (NCS).</p> Methods <p>Data were collected from 245 participants (120 boys, 125 girls; M age = 15.58, SD = 1.76) over three time points as part of a longitudinal design and analyzed using a Cross-Lagged Panel Model (CLPM).</p> Results <p>Results indicated that NCS was significantly predicted by ANI and FN at different time points. In addition to the direct effects of T1 FN and T2 ANI on NCS at subsequent time points, we also identified the potential process of NCS development in adolescence.</p> Conclusion <p>This study provides new insights into adolescents’ NCS from a cognitive and time perspective, highlighting a potential reinforcement pattern of avoidant coping. It further offers important implications for interventions aimed at addressing negative attentional bias and promoting healthier coping strategies.</p>

Objective

Methods
