<p><span>Multi-tac</span> was a machine learning system that synthesized heuristic constraint satisfaction programs. This paper is a retrospective analysis of an article describing <span>Multi-tac</span> that appeared in the first issue of the journal <i>Constraints</i> in 1996. We describe the contribution made by the paper and also consider how the research plan might have been modified to make a larger impact.</p>
