Eye of the Beholder: Self- and Spouse-Perceived Attachment Behaviors and Relationship Quality
摘要
This study sought to examine whether self-reported attachment behaviors or perceptions of spouse’s attachment behaviors are more related to relationship quality for self and partner. Data were taken from the online RELATE assessment and included 495 heterosexual married couples. For husbands and wives, self-reported attachment behaviors, their perception of their spouse’s attachment behaviors, the spouse’s self-reported attachment behaviors, and the spouse’s perceptions of the partner’s attachment behaviors were all positively associated with higher relationship quality. Results also indicated that perceptions of spouse’s attachment behaviors are a stronger predictor of one’s own relationship quality than all other predictors. Findings highlight the importance of perception regarding attachment for men and women. Implications for research and clinical work are discussed.
