<p>Chinese mythology remains a highly prominent literary and cultural resource for transmedia adaptations and retellings worldwide. However, insufficient attention has been paid to webcomic renditions of these classic narratives. This study examines contemporary Chinese webcomics that are popular among young adult readers, particularly those inspired by the renowned collection of ancient myths and legends known as the <i>Shan Hai Jing</i> (<i>The Classic of Mountains and Seas</i>). Through a detailed analysis of a popular webcomic adaptation of <i>Shan Hai Jing</i> serialised on the Bilibili Comics app, <i>Tonight’s Menu: Magical Beasts</i>!, this article explains how webcomic adaptations revitalise ancient materials for youths by bridging gaps between antiquity and contemporary culture, as well as between print and digital storytelling formats. These adaptive approaches create a richly intertextual, digital-friendly version that embeds classic narratives into modern young adult reading cultures. By adopting modes of adaptation that focus not merely on fidelity but on revitalisation, the webcomic highlights the importance of engaging with these never-ending stories in a glocalised, digitally-mediated space.</p>
