The section-wise literature was analyzed for the studies related to cellulose-based microfiber and their fate in the environment. The detailed analysis of selected literature showed that based on the type of dye and finishing chemical used, the degradation of cellulosic fiber was decreased significantly in the range of 3–26%. The presence of crosslinking agents or other functional elements such as biocidal chemicals also restrict biodegradation. As most of the&#xa0;existing literature focuses on synthetic MFs, the review findings are alarming that, like synthetic MFs, cellulosic MFs also have a longer time to degrade based on the type of finish and dye used. The study also reported the research gap in the cellulosic MFs with varieties of finishes, and their corresponding environmental impacts. Hence, review proposed future directives for subsequent research.</p>

摘要

Microfibers (MFs) are an emerging anthropogenic pollutant recently identified as a serious environmental threat. Although several researchers have evaluated MF pollution, most studies have addressed synthetic MFs due to their impact. Cellulosic MFs are often ignored owing to their biodegradability. However, a higher proportion of cellulosic MFs in the environment than synthetic MFs has recently been reported. Hence, this study aims to critically review the existing literature and research to understand the causes of the huge abundance and potential environmental impact of natural/cellulosic MFs. The first part of the review analyzed the literature using the PRISMA method and evidenced that out of 2114 selected literature, 74 research works reported the abundance, emission, and degradation behavior of cellulosic MFs. As most of the existing literature focuses on synthetic MFs, the review findings are alarming that, like synthetic MFs, cellulosic MFs also have a longer time to degrade based on the type of finish and dye used. The study also reported the research gap in the cellulosic MFs with varieties of finishes, and their corresponding environmental impacts. Hence, review proposed future directives for subsequent research.
