Echoes of War: Identity Crisis and Coping Strategies Among Palestinian Arab Adolescents in Israel
摘要
Adolescents living in conflict zones, particularly Palestinian Arab adolescents, citizens in Israel, face unique challenges during war that significantly influence their identity formation and coping strategies. As part of an indigenous minority, these teens belong to a society undergoing change, but one that remains largely shaped by collectivist values. As a result, adolescents’ experiences during crises, like the ongoing Israeli Palestinian war that began on October 7th, 2023, are affected by their society and its norms and values. This qualitative study, based on six focus groups with 34 adolescents aged 12–18 from Palestinian Arab society in Israel, explores adolescents’ subjective experiences of war and coping strategies within social, cultural, and political contexts. Two main findings emerged: (a) a collective identity crisis, in which the adolescents initially felt a connection to Israeli society, but as the war progressed and they faced challenges related to their minority status, they increasingly identified with the Palestinian people; and (b) coping strategies characterized primarily by avoidance, self-censorship, emotional suppression, and social withdrawal, shaped by war-related events, media exposure, and interactions with the Jewish majority group. This study highlights the complex interplay of social and political factors during war and their impact on minority adolescents’ identity and coping strategies, thereby addressing an underexplored research gap concerning the lived experiences of Palestinian Arab adolescents during wartime as citizens of Israel and contributing to theoretical discussions on collective identity and coping under conditions of political conflict.
