<p>Freshwater ecosystems are among the most biodiverse yet vulnerable environments, supporting a wide array of species, including fish that play crucial ecological and socio-economic roles. However, these ecosystems face numerous threats, such as habitat destruction, pollution, climate change, and invasive species, leading to significant declines in fish populations. Understanding the biology and ecology of freshwater fish is essential for conservation, fisheries management, and ecosystem modeling. This study aimed to identify knowledge gaps in the biology and ecology of freshwater fish species in European inland waters using FishBase, a global database on fish species. Through data extraction via the rFishBase package and subsequent analysis, we examined the existing knowledge on species’ life-history traits, including migratory behavior, growth, reproduction, and diet. Our findings reveal substantial gaps, particularly in data on migratory behavior, maximum weight, age, fecundity, and mortality. The study underscores the need for targeted research to fill these gaps and suggests ecosystem-based management, the precautionary principle, and community engagement as interim strategies for species conservation. Addressing these deficiencies is critical for sustainable freshwater fish biodiversity management in European inland waters.</p>
