Influence of microhabitats on the bryophyte community in a coastal subtropical forest

Quantitative data on the distribution of bryophytes across forest microhabitats remain scarce, despite their significant roles to these ecosystems and potential to understand ecological processes. Here, we investigated bryophyte community structure at the microhabitat scale in a coastal subtropical forest, focusing on species-substrate relationships and their drivers. We sampled nine 10 × 10 m plots across three sites and collected bryophytes from 20 × 20 cm subplots on seven substrates: decomposing log, exposed root, leaf, rock, soil, tree base, and tree trunk. We assessed abundance, cover, frequency, species richness, and importance value (IV). We also recorded spatial, stand structure, and abiotic variables. In total, we recorded 99 bryophyte species, belonging to the Marchantiophyta (58) and Bryophyta (41), distributed across 28 families and 53 genera. Lejeunea flava was the most dominant species (IV = 8.09). Total abundance, cover, and species richness varied across substrates, from lowest on leaves to highest on tree trunks, but their contributions to community structure were not significantly different. Substrates formed distinct groups in terms of species composition (R² = 28%, p = 0.001), although non-epiphytic substrates showed no significant differences among them. Species composition was strongly influenced by mature forest characteristics, such as higher tree basal area (R² = 35%, p < 0.002) and tree height (R² = 21%, p < 0.02), and soil moisture (R² = 16%, p < 0.03). These findings highlight the importance of conserving local conditions and forest microhabitats for maintaining bryophyte diversity and community structure, reinforcing the need for habitat-specific conservation strategies.
