<p>The Neotropical otter, <i>Lontra longicaudis</i>, is viewed as a potential competitor with humans in activities related to fisheries and aquaculture. Nevertheless, there are few studies concerning their possible interaction. This species is listed as Near Threatened (NT) by the IUCN and as Vulnerable (VU) in Colombia. Despite their great importance, several socio-ecological gaps persist in addressing conflicts between humans and the river otter from an ethnobiological perspective. Understanding the underlying factors of human-otter interactions, which in most cases are typified as conflicts with fishermen, is essential for successful adaptive management strategies that integrate both social and biological variables. We conducted 108 semi-structured interviews in five sites and analyzed attitudes and associations between socio-demographic variables and the existence of <i>L. longicaudis</i>. The 48.14% percent of interviewees showed negative attitudes otter, mainly to economic loss, stating that the otter steals the fish that are caught. The socio-demographic factor affecting conflicts were economic activity, age and gender (men). Here, we highlight the main results of human-otter interactions in a hydroelectric dam of the central Andes of Colombia. Our results will contribute to the conservation of the Neotropical River otter and by extension to the rivers that require actions for their recovery and conservation and reduce further conflicts between people and these mammals.</p> Graphical abstract <p></p>
