<p>This special issue comprises 11 contributions from researchers concerned with the conservation of cultural forests, sacred groves, and other traditionally managed woodlands in China, Ethiopia, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Morocco, and Mozambique. They highlight the importance of long-term traditional management. It raises issues relating to their security, management, and protection; including balancing with economic pressures. An important overview of European managed forest ecosystems is included.</p>
