Distribution, endemism and conservation of Abatia - the American lineage of Salicaceae with opposite leaves

Abatia, with 11 known species, is recorded from Mexico, north of Argentina, and the southeast and southern regions of Brazil. Generally, the species occur in areas of high-elevation (between 480 and 3,900 m). The present study aims to investigate the geographic distribution of Abatia species and their possible endemism, and to propose the conservation status reassessments. For this, a database based on collected samples during field expeditions and herbarium vouchers was built. Shannon’s, density, richness and diversity analyses were performed by using DIVA-GIS 7.5.0, in addition, bioregions and parsimony analyses of endemism were also carried out on Infomap Bioregions site and WinClada/Nona. Abatia has a completely Neotropical distribution, with two main centers of diversity: the Andean chain mountain and Campos de altitude in the Brazilian Atlantic rainforest. In Brazil, the areas with higher numbers of records are Itacolomi State Park and Caparaó National Park. The greatest observed richness and Shannon’s diversity are found in the Peruvian Huánuco region, while the greatest estimated richness is found in northern Peru, in the borderland between the Northern and Central Andes. Six bioregions were identified, which correspond to the order of endemism degree. Finally, based on the criteria established by the IUCN, risk assessments of Abatia species are proposed: two species as Critically Endangered (A. mantiqueirensis and A. microphylla), five Endangered (A. canescens, A. glabra, A. mexicana, A. rugosa and A. spicata), A. angeliana as Near Threatened and three as Least Concern (A. americana, A. parviflora and A. stellata).
