Evaluation of the influence of the duration of the first phase of a truncated exponential biphasic depolarizing defibrillation pulse on its energy efficiency

Data from modeling of the responses of cardiomyocytes in a state of simulated fibrillation to a truncated exponential biphasic depolarizing defibrillation pulse with energetically optimal second phase duration, between-phase pause, and second-phase amplitude coefficient, were used to compare energy efficiencies for different first-phase durations. The modeling results showed that reducing the duration of the first phase of the pulse below the energetically optimal value of 4 msec led to a decrease in its energy efficiency over a wide range of relative energy values. Increasing the duration of the first phase above the optimal led to an increase in energy efficiency at low relative energy values.
