<p>Mechanical circulatory support systems based on implantable axial and centrifugal pumps are currently in wide used in clinical practice in the treatment of patients with terminal heart failure. Among these pumps, the leading positions are taken by the HeartMate&#xa0;II and HeartMate&#xa0;3. The objectives of this article are to analyze the technical and biomedical characteristics of these pumps and to provide a&#xa0;comparative description of the efficacy of their clinical application.</p>
