Biological control of the sugarcane planthopper, Pyrilla perpusilla by the introduction and colonization of ectoparasitoid moth, Epiricania (= Fulgoraecia) melanoleuca in a sugarcane crop island ecosystem

The sugarcane planthopper, Pyrilla perpusilla Walker (Hemiptera: Lophopidae) is a serious sap-sucking pest of sugarcane in the Indian sub-continent. The present study reports the biological control of P. perpusilla in a sugarcane crop island ecosystem with the introduction, colonization, and establishment of the ectoparasitoid moth, Epiricania (= Fulgoraecia) melanoleuca (Fletcher) (Lepidoptera: Epipyropidae) after the systematic release over a four-year (2021–2024) period. Inoculative and augmentative releases of eggs and cocoons of the parasitoid moth E. melanoleuca into sugarcane plantations showed that the parasitoid established and controlled the P. perpusilla effectively within one–two years. Post-release population estimates revealed that the higher levels of P. perpusilla populations (24.75 ± 3.16 individuals per leaf) were brought under control (0.03 ± 0.001 individuals per leaf) within one 1-year period and the biological control maintained by the parasitoid successfully during the subsequent period without augmentative efforts. The parasitoid naturally dispersed and established in the entire study area confirming its adaptability, efficiency and sustainability as a biocontrol agent on the P. perpusilla. The parasitoid also indicated a remarkable synergistic effect with the existing natural enemies and especially showcased greater compatibility with the naturally occurring entomopathogenic fungi. The study provides convincing evidence for E. melanoleuca as a biocontrol agent for managing P. perpusilla in sugarcane by introduction and colonization, and the approach could serve as a sustainable solution to P. perpusilla infestation, reducing the need for chemical interventions and promoting environmental balance.
