Dietary dimethyl-β-propiothetine supplementation for abalone Haliotis discus hannai: effects on growth, digestion, immunity and appetite

A 90-day feeding trial was conducted to investigate the effects of dimethyl-β-propiothetine (DMPT) on the growth, feeding utilization, digestive capacity and immunity of abalone Haliotis discus hannai. The 900 abalones (initial weight: 4.27 ± 0.03 g) were randomly distributed into six groups, and fed with six diets with 0, 0.0125%, 0.025%, 0.05%, 0.1% and 0.2% of DMPT supplementation, respectively. These diets were designated as CON, DMPT0.0125, DMPT0.025, DMPT0.05, DMPT0.1 and DMPT0.2. Results showed that dietary DMPT significantly increased the weight gain rate, and the highest value (213.74%) was observed in the DMPT0.05 group (P < 0.05). The lowest feed conversion ratio and highest feed intake were also found in the DMPT0.05 group. The expression levels of npf, npfr and ox2r in the DMPT0.05 group were significantly up-regulated (P < 0.05). The total anti-oxidative capacity in the cell-free hemolymph was significantly improved in the DMPT0.05 and DMPT0.1 groups (P < 0.05). The activities of trypsin, lipase and amylase in the digestive gland were also significantly enhanced in the DMPT0.05 and DMPT0.1 groups (P < 0.05). The increased accumulation of vacuolization and quantities of refractile spherules in digestive gland were observed in the DMPT0.2 group. Expression levels of cuznsod and nrf2 in digestive gland were significantly upregulated in the DMPT0.2 group (P < 0.05). In contrast, keap1 expression in the DMPT0.05, DMPT0.1 and DMPT0.2 groups was found significantly downregulated (P < 0.05). In conclusion, considering the growth, feeding utilization, digestive capacity, the immunity and the broken-line model based on the weight gain rate of abalone, the recommended optimal supplementation level of DMPT in diet was 0.0407%.
