Evaluation index system for green development in oyster aquaculture: construction and empirical evidence from China

Oyster aquaculture is an important part of the fishery industry. Along with the continuous expansion of the aquaculture scale, the development of the oyster aquaculture industry has exposed many problems. The evaluation of industrial development is an important tool to measure the development process, identify the development opportunities, and promote the growth of the industry. In order to construct an indicator system suitable for the evaluation of the green development level of oyster and other aquaculture industries and to make methodological choices, this study uses R clustering-factor analysis to construct an evaluation indicator system, integrates various weighting and evaluation methods to overcome the shortcomings of a single method, and adopts gray relational analysis to explore the influencing factors. Empirical results indicate that from 2001 to 2022, the comprehensive evaluation score for China’s oyster aquaculture industry rose from 72.103 to 87.038. The industry’s green development level reached its lowest point in 2003, and after 2020, it entered a high-level range. At the indicator level, the green economy dimension received a relatively low score, representing the primary bottleneck hindering further development. Among the evaluated metrics, the most strongly correlated indicator was the green environment dimension (X30). In fact, since 2018, marine resource issues have consistently been the main reason for the removal of a large number of oyster aquaculture facilities. The results of empirical analysis to evaluate the level of green development of the oyster aquaculture industry in China show that the results obtained by various methods are consistent and in line with the actual situation of the industry, and the methods are scientific, objective, and applicable.
