<p>A study was conducted on 300 freshwater fish specimens of Nile tilapia (<i>Oreochromis niloticus</i>) from Godavari Basin in the Nanded and Parbhani districts between May 2024 and April 2025 to assess protozoan infections. The ciliate protozoan <i>Chilodonella hexasticha</i> was detected in 90 tilapia specimens, representing a prevalence rate of 30%. Identification was carried out using light microscopy with silver nitrate staining, as well as scanning electron microscopy (SEM), which revealed distinct morphological characteristics, particularly in the ciliary structures. Histopathological examination revealed epithelial cell damage, necrosis, skin vacuolization, and notable gill alterations, including hyperplasia, lamellar fusion, and inflammatory infiltration, all of which indicated impaired respiratory function. This study represents the first confirmed report of <i>C. hexasticha</i> in freshwater fish from this region of India and highlights the importance of continuous surveillance and the development of effective management strategies to control protozoan infections in tropical aquaculture systems.</p>
