Unraveling the nutritional potential of the microalga Scenedesmus sp. and the zooplankton Diaphanosoma sp. as initial foods for the rearing of rohu (Labeo rohita) larvae

Live foods, especially the zooplankton, are preferable starter foods for fish and shellfish during the initial stages of larval rearing. The rohu, Labeo rohita, is one of the most preferred fish species in the Indian subcontinent and can be cultured in various aquaculture production systems. The larval rearing techniques of this species with suitable initial feed are needed to be prioritized. L. rohita larvae were reared for 30 days by feeding six different experimental diets to find out their effect on growth, survival, and nutrient composition. The tested diets were live Scenedesmus sp. (T1), live Diaphanosoma sp. (T2), live Scenedesmus sp. + live Diaphanosoma sp. (T3), powdered Scenedesmus sp. (T4), powdered Diaphanosoma sp. (T5), and commercial feed (T6). Nutrient analysis of Scenedesmus sp. and Diaphanosoma sp. revealed that they are prominent sources of protein, lipid, amino acids and fatty acids. L. rohita larvae fed live Diaphanosoma sp. (T2) exhibited significantly higher (p < 0.05) gain in weight (125.65 mg), percent weight gain (7159.26%), gain in length (18.50 mm), percent length gain (347.15%), specific growth rate (481.03% day−1), and survival rate (86.30%) than all other diets given, followed by T3, T6, T1, T5, and T4, respectively. Among the six diets given, the live Diaphanosoma sp. resulted the highest (p < 0.05) accumulation of protein (65.27%) and lipid (6.37%) contents in L. rohita larvae. Considering the findings of the present research, the live Diaphanosoma sp. may be used as an initial food for the larval rearing of L. rohita.
