<p>It is necessary to develop formulated feeds to accelerate gonad production of the sea urchin <i>Strongylocentrotus intermedius</i> at low temperature due to the increasing market demand for sea urchins. We conducted a 5-week feeding experiment to explore whether the dried food consumption, gonad production and gonad color of sea urchins could be improved by formulated feeds with <i>Gracilaria lemaneiformis</i> (feed 1) or <i>Porphyra yezoensis</i> (feed 2) as the main components at different temperatures (7, 11, and 15&#xa0;°C), compared with those fed with kelp. The present study found that dried food consumption and gonad weight of sea urchins fed with the present formulated feeds were both significantly higher than those of sea urchins fed with kelp at all the three temperatures (7, 11, and 15&#xa0;°C). At 7&#xa0;°C, sea urchins fed with feed 2 showed significantly lower dried food consumption and higher gonad weight compared to those fed with feed 1. In addition, formulated feeds had no effect on gonad color at all the three temperatures. These results indicate that the present formulated feeds can improve dried food consumption and gonad production without adversely affecting the color of the gonads. Sea urchins fed with feed 2 exhibited an optimal effect on enhancing the gonad production. Therefore, we suggest aqua-farmers use the present formulated feed containing <i>P. yezoensis</i> as the primary food source at low temperature.</p>
