摘要

Researching a country’s gender relations in general and gender in management specifically is a huge challenge and a rich undertaking. This perspective paper offers a critique of existing literature on women in management in China and offers insights to advance the field. We identify competing forces in gender equality campaigns on the one hand and pressure for retraditionalization on the other as the country’s birth rate declines. We call for shifting the research focus from women in management to gender in management. We suggest that researchers investigate issues related to gender in management in China through a legitimacy lens. we propose new epistemic and thematic angles for future research, with examples of research themes and questions. We suggest that future research should compare men and women in order to find out women’s situations and challenges, examine sexual minorities and the intersectionality of sexuality and class in managerial identity, explore the role of males in advancing gender equality, and investigate career capital as a personal resource for gendered career progression. We conclude the paper by calling for the (re)engagement with a broader intellectual lens to examine gender in management in China beyond an elitist and utilitarian assessment of the role of women managers on employee and organizational outcomes.
