How can employees’ parents become the wealth of the organization? The increasing curvilinear effect of family intergenerational support on employee green behavior
摘要
Scholars have predominantly investigated the antecedents of employee green behavior (EGB) through a work-centric lens by emphasizing the role of green-related contextual factors in the organization. Despite the potential significance, how non-green-related triggers in the family domain will promote EGB remains understudied. Drawing on the work-home resources model, this study introduces family intergenerational support as a key family-domain resource that exhibits an increasing curvilinear relationship (i.e., a gradually increasing positive effect) with EGB. Specifically, we argue that this positive effect of family intergenerational support on EGB is less apparent at lower levels of family intergenerational support but progressively strengthens as the level of such support gradually increases. Further, we highlight the mediating role of job resource crafting in this increasing curvilinear relationship and emphasize the moderating role of green work climate perception in the relationship between job resource crafting and EGB. Using a scenario-based experiment and a questionnaire survey conducted in China, we validated all hypotheses. This research not only challenges the prevailing work-centric paradigm in shaping EGB by demonstrating how non-green family resources can have an increasing curvilinear influence on EGB but also offers new insights for managers in shaping workplace sustainability behaviors.
