Scaling up into a niche leader in an emerging economy through continuous business model innovation: an effectuation perspective

This study examines how entrepreneurs of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) make use of effectual cognition to make continuous business model innovation in the new industry ecosystem in the emerging economy. It has developed a scaling process model of SMEs by conducting one in-depth longitudinal case study of a niche leader in producing electric vehicle charging products and services in China. The research findings suggest that the process in which SMEs scale up to become niche leaders starts with the entrepreneur’s effectual cognition about the external and internal environment, and ends with entrepreneurial actions to implement an innovative business model. The scaling of SMEs is significantly affected by the entrepreneur’s effectual cognition about the evolution of new industry and its ecosystem. The entrepreneur needs to keep sensing the dynamic changes of new industries in an effectual approach and making continuous business model innovation to scale up their business to become a niche leader.
