Late-stage impacts of Sabiá [Mimosa caesalpiniifolia Benth.] arboreal legume trees on soil moisture, nitrogen content, and herbage and structural characteristics of Urochloa decumbens (Stapf) R.D. Webster in a silvopastoral system

The use of silvopastoral systems (SPSs) provides ecosystem benefits and contributes to the sustainability of livestock production. The objective with this study was to evaluate the impact of competition, based on the distance from sabiá (Mimosa caesalpiniifolia Benth.) arboreal legume trees, on soil moisture, total nitrogen, herbage mass, and structural characteristics of signalgrass [Urochloa decumbens (Stapf) R.D. Webster] in an SPS after seven years of tree establishment. The experiment was conducted in a randomized block design with three replications in a tropical climate. The treatments were U. decumbens: (i) in monoculture and (ii) in an SPS with U. decumbens + M. caesalpiniifolia. Soil moisture and herbage characteristics were evaluated at five distances from the trees (2.5, 5, 7.5, 10, and 12.5 m) and in a signalgrass monoculture every 21 days throughout 2023–2024. Herbage mass showed a quadratic response with distance, with higher values in the SPS at 7.5 m from the trees (4213 kg ha⁻1). Tiller population density was reduced by 53% at 2.5 m compared to signalgrass monoculture. Late-stage sabiá arboreal tree legume affects nitrogen content and pasture structure of signalgrass up to a distance of 5.0 m, reducing tiller population density, herbage mass, and herbage density, highlighting the need for appropriate management to mitigate the effects of the tree component on pasture.
