<p>The success of implementing silvopastoral systems (SPS) is mainly related with the choice of forage species. The objective of the present study was to evaluate the productivity and nutritional quality of tropical grass biomass in a SPS and harvest intervals in southeastern Mexico. The treatments were: Mombasa guinea grass (<i>Megathyrsus maximus</i> cv. Mombasa) and Star grass (<i>Cynodon plectostachyus</i> (K. Schum.) Pilg.), both planted in a SPS with <i>Leucaena leucocephala</i> cv. Cunningham and two harvest intervals (30 and 50&#xa0;days) in a completely randomized design with four replications. The biomass of each grass was evaluated using the quadrant technique and the forage was weighed fresh, separated, then dried to obtain productivity and chemical composition. <i>Megathyrsus maximus</i> harvested at intervals of 50&#xa0;days showed the highest (<i>p</i> &lt; 0.05) productivity of leaves, stems, senescent material and total biomass (1308.0, 253.5, 216.1 and 1,778.0&#xa0;kg DM ha<sup>–1</sup>, respectively). <i>Cynodon plectostachyus</i> leaves harvested at intervals of 50&#xa0;days showed higher (<i>p</i> &lt; 0.001) crude protein (CP) and lower neutral detergent fiber (NDF) contents compared with <i>M. maximus</i>. Regarding the quality of the stems, it was observed that the CP and NDF contents were similar (<i>p</i> &gt; 0.05) between the treatments. The SPS with <i>L. leucocephala, M. maximus</i> and <i>C. plectostachyus</i> showed good productivity and forage quality, and <i>M. maximus</i> harvested at an interval of 50&#xa0;days is recommended to obtain greater forage production.</p>
