Upper-Airway-Cough-Syndrom
摘要
Upper airway cough syndrome (UACS) is one of the most frequent causes of chronic cough. In many cases UACS is caused by a chronic inflammatory disease of the upper airways, e.g., allergic rhinitis (AR), nonallergic rhinitis (NAR) and chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS); however, the exact pathophysiological relationships are not yet fully understood and there are various mechanisms that can contribute to the development of the syndrome, either alone or in combination. During the clarification process otorhinolaryngologists (ENT) should rule out AR, NAR and CRS or treat them accordingly if necessary. After exclusion of the aforementioned diseases, decongestant medication can be prescribed in combination with antihistamines, topical corticosteroids and NaCl nasal rinse. More modern medications, such as P2X3 receptor antagonists have just recently been approved in the European Union and could represent a treatment option in the future, even if they are not currently marketed in Germany.
