Aim <p>This manuscript assesses whether green spaces are associated with particulate matter-induced CVD mortality in Allegheny County.</p> Subject and methods <p>According to the WHO, exposure to elevated air pollution is nearly ubiquitous and is associated with deleterious health impacts, including cardiovascular disease, the leading driver of mortality internationally. This is seen especially in urban settings like Pittsburgh, whose industrial legacy and racist, inequitable city design have left Black, Brown, and impoverished communities more vulnerable to pollution’s caustic impacts. Recent amelioration attempts have seen a rise in the prominence of green spaces, which policymakers contend can mitigate pollution’s impacts, although research on this is mixed. Hence, this paper utilizes local indicators of spatial autocorrelation (LISA) analysis and subsequently spatial regression adjusting for social vulnerability index to investigate how green spaces may moderate PM2.5-associated CVD mortality in Pittsburgh.</p> Results <p>This research found stark geographic colocalization of air pollution and CVD mortality in regions in Allegheny County that have fewer green spaces. Spatial regression indicated that green spaces were associated with lower CVD mortality, but this association was weaker where air pollution was higher.</p> Conclusion <p>These results substantiate the importance of building greener cities that are healthy not just for their most affluent residents but for all their citizens.</p>
