Arabic validation and cultural adaptation of the Abbreviated Technology Anxiety Scale (ATAS)

Technology anxiety can negatively impact individuals’ willingness to adopt new technologies, thus lowering the quality of life. This study aimed to validate and culturally adapt an Arabic version of the Abbreviated Technology Anxiety Scale (ATAS).
Subject and methodsA cross-sectional study was conducted in five Arab countries: Saudi Arabia, Libya, Jordan, Egypt, and Syria. Following convenience and snowball sampling methods, participants aged ≥ 18 years were recruited. Online surveys and face-to-face interviews were conducted. The internal consistency reliability of the Arabic ATAS was assessed. The tool was tested for face, content, and construct validity.
ResultsAmong the 500 participants, 56.2% were female and 81% were urban residents, with a mean age of 31 ± 11 years. The mean score of the ATAS was 24.4 ± 9.7. The ATAS showed excellent internal consistency (Cronbach’s alpha = 0.96; split-half coefficient = 0.95). The item–total correlation ranged from 0.71 to 0.85. The average variance extracted was 0.71. The explanatory factor analysis showed a single-factor structure. The factor loadings of each item of the ATAS ranged from 0.72 to 0.88. The confirmatory factor analysis showed acceptable model fit indices [RMSEA = 0.08, CFI = 0.95, TLI = 0.93, SRMR = 0.03, NFI = 0.94, GFI = 0.91, and χ² test statistic = 271 on 44 degrees of freedom and p <0.001]. Over 75% of the common variance explained the standardized loadings for all the items. Older age (beta coefficient [β] = 0.19, 95% CI: 0.10–0.27), rural residence (β = 2.24, 95% CI: 0.12–4.36), and perceived difficulty in using the Internet (β = 6.73, 95% CI: 4.23–9.23) were significantly associated with a higher ATAS score.
ConclusionThe findings confirmed the reliability and validity of the Arabic ATAS as a self-report instrument to quantify technology anxiety among the general population.
