摘要

On 5th August 2025, a tragic flash flood occurred in the Kheer Gad catchment originating from the foot of Srikanth Parbat, causing huge devastation in the market area of Dharali village, Uttarkashi. It resulted in the death of ~ 200 people and destroyed houses, hotels, and other infrastructures in the Dharali village market. Based on an analysis of available photographs and videos, along with field and remote sensing data, we present a detailed reconstruction of events that occurred in the Kheer Gad catchment. Field and video evidence show that the flood started from a tributary of Kheer Gad on the left bank at an elevation of ~ 4700 m above sea level. The continuous precipitation led to an increase in discharge, causing a breach in the moraine located on the left bank tributary, which resulted in debris flow in the downstream areas. The direct outcome was the Dharali village market washout on the same day, happening in one major event, followed by five minor flash floods and mud flow events. We have estimated the flood volume to be ~ 0.20 ± 0.03 MCM at the Dharali village market.
