Impact of a clustered rainfall-induced geo-hydrological disaster on densely populated gully villages in Fuyang District, Hangzhou City, Zhejiang Province, China on 22 July 2023

On 22 July 2023, an unprecedented rainfall event struck Fuyang District, Hangzhou City, Zhejiang Province, China, resulting in five deaths and three missing persons by severe geo-hydrological hazards, including 32 small-scale mountain floods and, over 55 shallow landslides and debris flows. This news article reports the social impact of this event, depicts characteristics of the disaster based on a preliminary field investigation, and reveals the causes of casualties. It is hoped that this event will draw the attention of researchers to the forecast and mitigation of extreme rainfall-induced geo-disasters.
