From data to habitat management: hierarchical multi-scale modelling of Barbary Partridge (Alectoris barbara) density in a peri-urban Mediterranean forest

In Mediterranean countries, as elsewhere, greenbelts are a prominent feature of the urban landscape. Therefore, it is relevant to study their use by wildlife. Generalised linear mixed models were used to assess how the landscape composition of the Rabat Greenbelt (RG) influenced the density of Barbary partridge (BP, Alectoris barbara) at three spatial scales, namely macroscale (RG area of BP presence/absence), mesoscale and microscale (RG area of BP presence only). We used data collected over 4 seasons (two visits per season) between 3 November 2022 and 13 September 2023 in 60 transects (two visits per season in 4 seasons) distributed across the RG area. At the macroscale, BP density was negatively correlated with the extent of monospecific and mixed forests without understorey. In contrast, at the mesoscale, this density was positively associated with the monospecific and mixed forests with understorey. At the microscale, BP density was positively correlated with high shrub cover and low tree presence. The results demonstrate the fundamental role of the understorey in improving BP density in RG. Spatially targeted management actions are suggested to improve the habitat quality of BPs in RG. This finding will provide urban forest wildlife managers with valuable insights into the potential role of the RG as a restocking nucleus that could, in the near future, supply hunting estates on the outskirts of Rabat city. The synergy between RG forest managers, researchers and civil society is recommended to improve the ecological conditions of BPs in this Mediterranean urban greenbelt.
