Vocalizations of interacting Hazel dormice and Hazel dormice with pups in a natural environment

Among rodents and other small mammals, ultrasonic vocalizations (USVs) have often been detected. Muscardinus avellanarius, a member of the Gliridae family, is known to emit USVs as well as audible vocalizations (ASVs) with behavioural importance. Those data have been obtained using only captive animals till today. In the present study vocalizations of Muscardinus avellanarius have been studied in natural environment, during undisturbed situations and in part camera controlled. Interaction between two individuals, courtship, mating and female-pup interactions have been studied. Eight different call types have been found. Six USVs and ASVs could be detected. A characteristic USV element that is used in courtship situations as well as in female-pup and adult-adult interactions has been shown. Harmonics are present in all call types. Subharmonics have been detected in unusual situations during mating and in nests with pups. USVs are in a range between 20 and 55 kHz. Some of them have a down sweep part to lower than 10 kHz. Calls of pups are often more complex compared to calls of adults. Further studies have to be done to collect more information about the relation between call types and social behaviour, alarm situations and the reasons of differences of the maximal frequency detected.
