Spatial pattern analysis of species richness among amphibians in China and its implications for species conservation

Systematically identifying the distributional characteristics of amphibian diversity and their underlying drivers is critical for developing effective conservation strategies. This study utilized Geographic Information System (GIS) spatial analysis techniques to examine amphibian species richness patterns in China at a 10 km × 10 km grid resolution, focusing on all species, different taxonomic levels and threatened species. In addition to conventional climatic and topographic variables, we incorporated shoreline density, impervious surface density and the Human Influence Index, and employed the Geodetector model to identify the environmental drivers of species richness patterns. The results indicated that the amphibian species richness in China exhibited strong spatial dependence, with high values in Central, East, and South China closely associated with topography. Caudata species were highly endangered and displayed a fragmented and discontinuous distribution. Anura species richness showed a spatial pattern similar to overall amphibian species richness, and family composition varied across regions. Geodetector analysis revealed that climate factors were the primary drivers of amphibian species richness. Rather than being shaped by a single factor, amphibian diversity resulted from the combined effects of multiple environmental variables. High species richness values were concentrated in areas with moderate altitude relief, high shoreline density, and frequent human activities.
