The indicators for legal status, protected area objectives, protected area design, management plan, and&#xa0;contribution of forest environmental service fee to National Park management and environs had the highest average scores, while visitor facilities and services had the lowest scores. In order to improve the ME of Bach Ma NP, some measures of management response should be taken such as strengthening capacity building, raising awareness and education, developing an&#xa0;adaptive management plan, providing equipment and related services, and promoting the participation of stakeholders, especially indigenous peoples and local communities.</p>

摘要

Assessment of management effectiveness (ME) in protected areas (PAs) has become an important component of management, and is increasingly being implemented worldwide. The aim of this study is to assess the ME to identify threats to the main values and management issues of Bach Ma National Park (NP) in Central Vietnam, thereby development of appropriate action plans to improve management. This study was implemented using the World Wildlife Fund's Management Effectiveness Tracking Tool-version 4 (METT-4) with a total score of 126. The results showed that the METT-4 scores of 2021 and 2023 were satisfactory, but the improvement of ME was insignificant (only an increase of 3.97% from 69.05% in 2021 to 73.02% in 2023). Currently, the following threats to biodiversity that the NP is still facing: (i) illegal hunting, (ii) loss of keystone species and (iii) illegal logging and nontimber forest and products (NTFPs). The indicators for legal status, protected area objectives, protected area design, management plan, and contribution of forest environmental service fee to National Park management and environs had the highest average scores, while visitor facilities and services had the lowest scores. In order to improve the ME of Bach Ma NP, some measures of management response should be taken such as strengthening capacity building, raising awareness and education, developing an adaptive management plan, providing equipment and related services, and promoting the participation of stakeholders, especially indigenous peoples and local communities.
