Unraveling the Biology and Integrated Management Strategies for Tobacco Beetle (Lasioderma serricorne) in Stored Tobacco: A Comprehensive Review

Tobacco, originating from leaves of plants in Nicotiana genus, notably Nicotiana tabacum, has long history and significant cultural impact. It has been consumed through various methods like smoking, chewing, and snuffing, and is often tied to social traditions. Pakistan is recognized as one of world’s leading tobacco producers, with several regions particularly renowned for tobacco cultivation. Among these areas are Baluchistan, Punjab, and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Life cycle of L. serricorne, which consists of the egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages, distinguishes its biology. In many nations across the world, cigarette beetles are a major economic nuisance. Feeding on a wide range of stored goods, including dried goods of vegetable and animal origin, nuts, herbs, and spices, grain, and grain products, might result in damage from larvae. Reducing the effects of L. serricorne requires the use of Integrated Pest Management (IPM) strategies that incorporate chemical, biological, and cultural techniques. Sustainable management will require ongoing investigation into the mechanisms underlying the pest’s resistance and the creation of substitute control methods.
