Exploring Host Resistance in Oilseed Brassica species against Albugo candida [(Pers.) Kuntze] Isolates under Variable Agro-climatic Conditions in India

White rust is a devastating disease of rapeseed-mustard crops in India as well as some other countries in the world. Therefore, it is crucial to explore the genetic sources of resistance in Brassica genotypes for suppressing the disease. In current study, large scale screening of indigenous and exotic collections of other Brassica species and Brassica wild relatives against thirteen diverse isolates of A. candida was done at cotyledonary and true leaf stages of plants under artificially inoculated conditions and adult plant stages under multi-location field trials during 2021–2024 crop seasons. Among 54 lines screened, 35 of other Brassica spp. and 9 of Brassica wild relatives were identified as resistant types under artificial and field screening against different isolates of A. candida. Two accessions of other Brassica species namely, EC206641 (B. carinata) and EC339005 (B. napus) exhibited immune reaction to all the 13 isolates of A. candida. Furthermore, two accessions of wild relatives namely IC572843 (Lepidium sativum) and EC694159 (Crambe abyssinica) showed immune response against 9 different isolates of A. candida. The GGE biplot explained 97.8% of total variation and visually displayed the resistance and stability of the evaluated accessions to white rust disease. These novel sources of host resistance against virulent pathotypes of A. candida are critically important and will help to create a strong background for identification and molecular mapping of resistance gene(s)/QTL and sustainable management of white rust disease in India.
