<p>Brown rot caused by <i>Monilinia fructigena</i> is a&#xa0;major disease of pome and stone fruits, but its occurrence on loquat (<i>Eriobotrya japonica</i>) has been rarely documented. In this study, brown rot symptoms were observed on loquat fruits in orchards in Bartın province, Türkiye. Morphological characteristics and molecular analyses, including rDNA-ITS sequencing, confirmed the causal agent as <i>M.&#xa0;fructigena</i>. Pathogenicity tests verified that the isolate could infect loquat fruits and produce typical brown rot symptoms, fulfilling Koch’s postulates. Inoculation trials also demonstrated that the isolate may pose a&#xa0;risk to other economically significant members of the Rosaceae family, such as apricot and apple. This represents the first report of <i>M.&#xa0;fructigena</i>-induced brown rot on loquat in Türkiye, expanding the known host range of the pathogen and highlighting the importance of monitoring and early disease management to prevent potential outbreaks.</p>

Identification and Characterization of Monilinia fructigena Causing Brown Rot on Eriobotrya japonica in Türkiye

摘要

Brown rot caused by Monilinia fructigena is a major disease of pome and stone fruits, but its occurrence on loquat (Eriobotrya japonica) has been rarely documented.
