Optimizing the Litchi (Litchi chinensis L.) Harvest Window Through Potassium Nitrate and Gibberellic Acid Applications Under North-West Bihar Conditions

A 2-year field experiment (2020–2021 to 2021–2022) was conducted in the West Champaran district of Bihar, India, to evaluate the effectiveness of potassium nitrate (KNO3) and gibberellic acid (GA3) in prolonging the harvesting window of litchi (cv ‘Shahi’). Altogether, three treatments were used, i.e., T1: KNO3 (0.5%) foliar spray at 35 days after fruit set, T2: GA3 (100 ppm) foliar spray at 35 days after fruit set, and control (farmer’s practice) where no chemical spray was applied. The study area was selected near the Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Madhopur, for smooth monitoring, timely spray and scientific recording of the data. After collection of the observations from the field, the results of the study revealed that T2 recorded the longest duration from fruit set to maturity (65.80 days), extending maturity by an average of 4.59 days compared to the control (61.21 days), while on the other hand, T1 recorded the shortest duration (60.15 days) from fruit set to maturity. With regard to fruit yield, it was noticed that T2 had the highest yield (75.22 kg/plant), followed by T1 (74.96 kg/plant), and both treatments outperformed the control (69.73 kg/plant). The maximum benefit–cost ratio was achieved with T2 (5.2), followed by T1 (4.9), and was lowest in the control (4.5). The results showed that the application of GA3 may delay the harvesting of litchi, improve fruit quality, enhance yield, and offer economic benefits compared to other treatments. However, KNO3 can advance the harvesting time of litchi. It was also observed that the application of both the treatments (KNO3 and GA3) enabled farmers to optimize the harvesting time and market returns in this region.
